Talking Cars 412: Driving the 2023 Nissan Z
Plus, we answer questions about engine-block heaters, and whether regular-grade fuel breaks down more easily over time than premium
Main theme: In this episode, we give our first impressions of the 2023 Nissan Z that we recently purchased for CR’s auto test program. We’re in the midst of putting on the usual 2,000 break-in miles as we do with every car before we begin our regimented testing.
Unlike the new Z we rented from Nissan a while back (and discussed in episode 364), our Z has the six-speed manual transmission rather than the nine-speed automatic. We bought the midlevel Performance trim, but regardless of the trim or transmission you opt for, every Z comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces a thrilling 400 hp.
Our panel delves into all-things-Z: from the retro styling cues to the powertrain, handling, ride, seat comfort, cabin noise, and oddly located seat controls. We even debate just how “new” the new Z really is.
Audience Questions:
- I’m moving soon to a part of Canada with colder winters. Do you think I will need an engine-block heater, even for my relatively new 2019 Mazda CX-5?
- I’m going to be storing my vehicle for a while. Would it be a good idea to fill the tank with premium fuel, rather than regular? I’ve heard that premium fuel is more stable than regular-grade gasoline, and I’m curious whether that’s true.
