Talking Cars 423: Driving the 2024 Subaru Impreza

And what is considered a reasonable lifespan for a modern car?

Main theme: The redesigned sixth-generation Impreza looks to continue the successful formula that has made this model such a mainstay in Subaru’s lineup. The new, hatchback-only Impreza doesn’t break any ground with its styling—it’s clearly an Impreza. It also sticks with the same Subaru-signature horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine design matched to a continuously variable transmission. As is the Subaru norm (with the exception of the BRZ sports car), all-wheel drive is standard.

The podcast panel gives their early impressions of driving the Impreza, covering how it rides and handles, and the learning curve when it comes to mastering the controls. They also touch on the interior’s fit and finish, uncovering a few surprises, such as the nice contrasting red stitching on the seats and the center and door armrests, as well as a few letdowns, like the plain plastic steering wheel. (Read our Subaru Impreza first drive review.)

Audience question: What is considered a reasonable lifespan for a modern car? Growing up, anything approaching 100,000 miles was considered to be on its last lap, yet I currently drive a 2011 Mazda CX-9 with 154,000 miles on it. Am I playing with fire thinking I can get to 200,000 miles? What mileage would you say is expected for a modern car?
