    Pillows

Side sleepers looking for an exceptionally breathable pillow will likely find the My Pillow Premium a suitable pick. It excels in our evaluation for side support and earns a top-tier score for breathability. Unfortunately, those are the only tests where this washable pillow impressed. For back sleepers, it offers only adequate support, and our tests found that the resiliency of the pillow was just average.

Side and back sleepers will find the GhostBed pillow quite dreamy. It’s made of shredded memory foam pieces with a polyester fiber cover and can be customized to your level of support by removing some of the shredded foam pieces and polyester gel fibers. Our tests found that sleepers of all sizes and positions can get some degree of improved support by removing various amounts of filling. This adjustable pillow, which comes in a pack of two, earns just middling marks in our resilience test but aces our breathability test.

The Talalay latex pillows from Brooklyn Bedding may be a good choice for side sleepers because they got above-average scores on that test. They’re a bit subpar for back sleepers, though. But these pillows got top marks for breathability, so they should help with temperature control while you sleep.

The Beckham Luxury Linens Hotel Collection Pillow has a 100-percent-cotton cover and a 100-percent-polyester gel-fiber filling. The pillow aced our test for breathability, so it should help keep you from feeling hot; it also scored top marks for resiliency, so it should maintain its shape over time.

Made of two layers of gel memory foam, Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow is the most expensive pillow we’ve tested. It’s top-notch when it comes to side-sleeper support, but only middling for back-sleeper support. In our resilience test, this pillow successfully maintained its shape. Despite having “breeze” in its name, the pillow doesn’t allow for much air flow, so you may get sweaty sleeping on it. Only the cover is machine washable.

Made of cooling gel memory foam, this Weekender pillow provides satisfying support for side sleepers and adequate support for those who sleep on their back. With prolonged use, expect this pillow to keep its shape, and retain its support and firmness. Per our tests, its resiliency is top-notch, as is its breathability.

This set of two microfiber pillows offers very good support for side sleepers, but it earns just middling scores in our back support tests. And its resilience is just so-so. But if you sleep on the warmer side, you can find comfort in knowing that this pillow has maximum breathability.

The Tuft & Needle Original Foam Pillow is made of polyurethane foam and comes with a micro-polyamide and polyester cover. Despite this composition, testers found that the pillow excels in breathability. It is a great choice for side sleepers, but less ideal for back sleepers, according to our lab tests. Expect its firmness, height, and support to remain consistent with use.

    Coop Home Goods The Original

The Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Loft Pillow is made of shredded memory foam and excels in our tests for support, no matter your size or sleep position. The Coop also keeps its shape well, showing little to no change in height or fluffiness in our resilience tests. Each pillow comes with extra foam, so you can adjust the filling to your liking. The only area where this pillow falls a bit short is in breathability—it sleeps slightly warm.

    Sheets

Brushed microfiber isn’t as breathable as cotton, but if synthetic fibers aren’t a hang-up, this Mellanni sheet set is a top-notch pick. It offers a softer feel than most cotton options, is pretty resistant to wrinkling, and you can expect a great fit even after a year of laundering. You can also look forward to having this set in rotation for a while, because it does pretty well in our strength test. The one area where these bedsheets miss the mark a bit is in our fit test. Though the packaging claims "deep pockets," this set is best suited for mattresses with a depth of 10 inches or less.

This Brooklinen set will fit a 14-inch mattress (or shorter). Our testers note that these sheets don’t shrink as much as some other cotton sheets we tested. They earn above-average scores for both fit and shrinkage, which means though they do tend to get smaller during washes, they don’t deform all that much over time. Luxe Core sheets are on the softer side, based on our sensory test. Labels along each side that read “short side” and “long side” make clear which way to make the bed.

    Weighted Blankets

    Luna Weighted Blanket

The cover of the Luna weighted blanket is cotton, and it’s filled with glass beads. It doesn’t come with a duvet cover, but you have several colors and materials to choose from if you’d like to buy one separately. Luna says you can wash the blanket in cold water on the gentle setting and hang it to dry or tumble-dry on low heat. A staffer who tried the Luna weighted blanket found it to be a solid choice for a budget-friendly price, but the materials didn’t look and feel as smooth and sleek as the pricier options that were tried.

    White Noise Machines

Magicteam Sound Machines White Noise Machine

This small plug-and-play sound machine from Magicteam is sized just right—like a deck of cards if cards were square. It delivers good sound quality and variety, packing in 20 sounds, including nature sounds and even a freight train. The controls, just five buttons, are intuitive to use, although one evaluator said they were quite small and a bit difficult to see in low light. And it has a timer in case you don’t want it playing all night.

    Sunrise Alarm Clocks

    JALL Sunrise Alarm Clock

The JALL Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock came out on top in our evaluations from an ease-of-use standpoint. It has two independent alarms (so you can set them for different times depending on your routine), seven alarm tones (including “wind bells” and birds chirping), an FM radio, and a fall-asleep mode that simulates a sunset (though no white-noise option). It was relatively easy to set up and use. According to the manufacturer, it emits a maximum light intensity of 240 lux. Tapping the snooze button will temporarily shut off both the light and the sound. (The advantage: You’re more likely to fall back asleep in the dark. The disadvantage? You’re more likely to fall back asleep in the dark.)

    Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3520/60

With the Philips SmartSleep Wake-Up Light, you can wake up to one of five nature sounds or an FM radio. According to the manufacturer’s description, the clock glows with red, orange, and yellow colors that ultimately brighten to a maximum intensity of 300 lux (a measure of illuminance an object produces). You can adjust brightness levels according to your preference. Pressing snooze will temporarily shut off the sound alarm but not the light, which may keep you from falling back asleep (a good thing, if you truly want to wake up). The SmartSleep is pretty easy to set up and use, receiving high marks in both categories. Those needing help winding down at bedtime will also find the Philips wake-up light worth it for its simulated sunset feature.

    Humidifiers

With the evaporative Vornado Huey, keeping a small room adequately moist is no problem: It gets our top score for output. As an evaporative model, it creates moisture by using a fan to blow air over a wet wick, so it’s not as quiet as some models. (Plus, the wick has to be replaced regularly.) There’s no automatic shutoff when the water is used up, but an indicator signals an empty tank.

The Crane Drop humidifier is for rooms up to 250 square feet and has a stellar overall rating in CR’s tests. This model comes with an empty-tank indicator and has an automatic shutoff. Easy to use and energy-efficient, this model also scores top marks for its low noise levels.

The ultrasonic, cool-mist PureGuardian H3200WAR is among the top-rated humidifiers for medium-sized rooms (300 to 400 square feet), hitting high notes for nearly every performance category we rate: output, convenience, noise, efficiency, and operation using hard water. But it loses points because it doesn’t have a humidistat to measure relative humidity. Online, though, you can buy a hygrometer that does that for less than $10.

The Frida 3-in-1 with Diffuser and Nightlight cool-mist humidifier is quiet, efficient, and works well even when filled with hard water. It’s also fairly convenient; for instance, it shuts off automatically when empty, and glows in the dark. You also can add essential oils for the unit to diffuse. However, we found it didn’t live up to the manufacturer’s claim that it could humidify areas up to 320 square feet—say a room of about 18x18 feet. So, it’s better off being used in a smaller area.

    Mattress Toppers

This 2-inch memory-foam topper provides great support while still allowing you to sink into it. And at 8 pounds, it’s not overly heavy to maneuver. It’s flippable, but this deal doesn’t come with a cover (though you can add one on yourself), and a lack of corner straps means it might shift around. You can return Linenspa products for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

Our lab tests found that this Casper topper doesn’t allow users to sink in as deeply as you would with others. The dual-layer cushion combines a layer of softer foam over a firmer base-layer foam. At 20 pounds and 3 inches thick, this mattress topper isn’t easy to move around, but its machine-washable zip-off cover (made of polyester, cotton, rayon, and spandex) is easy to clean. However, this topper cannot be flipped. Casper offers a 30-night risk-free trial, and its toppers are backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

This Tuft & Needle mattress topper earned excellent scores for both support and convenience in our lab tests. The flippable topper consists of a two-inch-thick slice of adaptive foam, wrapped in a removable polyester cover. This model doesn’t have corner straps, though, so it might shift a bit on your mattress. The Tuft & Needle topper comes with a 3-year limited warranty, and there’s a 30-day return policy.

    Slippers

    L.L.Bean Wicked Good Slippers

These L.L.Bean Wicked Good Slippers have a lot going for them: They’re made with sheepskin and lined with super-soft shearling (the pelt of sheepskin). But they were not the favorite of our testers, though none ranked them in the gutter. Some testers found their heels slipping uncomfortably out of the back of the slipper while walking, and the rawhide ties appear mostly for aesthetics.

    Air Purifiers

The portable Blue Pure 211i Max features an indicator light to alert you when you need to change or clean the filter. It also has a dirt sensor and four speeds. On its higher setting, it’s terrific at removing dust, pollen, and smoke, but expect a bit of noise. Try it on low and you’ll have more quiet while still experiencing top-notch results. This model is designed for use in a large space of 350 to 650 square feet and costs about $109 a year to maintain—just more than half that of the Pure 211+. It also weighs just 17 pounds, making it easy to move around. CR members found Blueair air purifiers highly reliable and were quite satisfied with their purchase.

The kid sister to the 211i Max, Blueair’s 411i Max has a similar design, but for a smaller space—CR recommends a medium room or smaller. The portable air purifier is primarily filter-based and has three speeds, a filter indicator, and a dirt sensor. On its higher speed it delivers pretty average results, and as with many air purifiers, it’s less effective on its lower speed. The model is easy to use and has a relatively low annual operating cost. Blueair came out on top for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction during CR’s first member survey.

The portable Blueair Protect 7470i features a handy filter indicator to alert you when you need to change or clean the filter. It also has a dirt sensor and three speeds. On its highest setting, it’s terrific at removing dust, pollen, and smoke, but expect a bit of noise. Try it on low and you’ll have more quiet while still getting solid results. This model is designed for floor or tabletop use in a space that’s about 420 square feet. It costs about $140 a year to maintain and weighs just under 28 pounds.

The Levoit LV-H132 Air Purifier isn’t a top performer. It earns subpar ratings for dust, pollen, and smoke removal on both high and low speeds, which is why CR testers suggest its best for smaller rooms (we’re talking cloffice-sized spaces). But it is pretty quiet, which is great when you have a day of Zoom calls, it has a fairly inexpensive annual operating cost, it’s easy to use, and it can fit neatly on your desk without taking up too much space.

The Levoit PlasmaPro 600S is a solid performer all-around, clearing the air of dust, pollen, and smoke at both higher and lower settings with great results. It’s noisy while running at a high speed, but it’s relatively quiet at low speeds. That makes it an ideal choice for an office or bedroom. And you don’t have to worry about keeping track of filter changes: An indicator light alerts you when it’s time. This machine also has a dust sensor and programmable timer.

For what CR considers a large room air purifier, the Samsung Bluesky is pretty compact. It stands at a little under 20” high, about 14” wide and less than a foot deep. Those looking to purify their bedroom will appreciate the sleep mode, which minimizes light and noise, and the activated carbon filter, that can help keep kitchen smells from infiltrating your resting space. In CR’s tests, this 4-speed model does a very good job at removing dust, pollen and smoke from the air at high speed, and an average job at clearing the air at lower speeds. Samsung recommends the Bluesky for rooms up to 260 feet, but its impressive test results suggest it can be utilized in a space that’s larger.

Samsung’s Bespoke Cube garners an impressive rating for its performance at its higher speed but is pretty subpar on its lower speed. But because it’s fairly quiet when operating at lower speeds, it’s best to put it in a smaller room than it’s intended. This model has a filter indicator light that tells you when the main HEPA filter is in need of changing, typically every 12 to 24 months, depending on use. This alert can also be found on the air purifier’s compatible app, which lets you monitor particulate counts, as well as control the unit, even when you’re outside of the home.

Loud but effective at removing dust, pollen, and smoke when running at its highest speed, this Airdog portable air purifier misses the mark in a key area: its air purifying performance at low speed is only fair, CR’s tests found. Note that, at about 25 pounds, it’s also relatively heavy.

    Space Heaters

The Vornado VMH600 has the best overall performance of all the space heaters in our tests. It tops our spot-heating test while falling just a bit short on room heating, where it earns an above-average rating. It’s one of the quieter heaters in our tests, too, and sports safety features such as a tip-over switch and a timer that allows you to program when the heater turns on and off. It weighs 10 pounds and has an easy-to-use fan and a remote control.

With a name like Heat Storm, you expect a lot, and both the Heat Storm Mojave and the Sahara (not currently on sale) hit our spot-heating test out of the park. The Mojave also earns above-average ratings for room heating, hot surface, noise, and ease of use. It weighs 9.5 pounds and comes with a fan and a remote control.

    Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towels

The Brooklinen Super-Plush bath towels are perfect for anyone who likes a towel as big as a blanket after their shower. These oversized towels are a whopping 53 inches long and 28 inches wide. They were also the most absorbent in our evaluation but took the longest time to dry. There are lots of color options to choose from as well.

    Gaiam Performance Yoga Mat

This Gaiam performance yoga mat dries very quickly. It offers excellent grip on the floor and on hands and feet, but only a fair amount of cushioning.

    Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat

This mat dries quickly but offers minimal cushioning. It offers only a fair amount of grip on the floor and on its dry top surface. Instead of rolling up, it folds into a 10x12-inch rectangle.
