First Drive: 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a Disappointing Effort

Besides the stiff ride and the loud cabin, this compact SUV offers little Alfa-ness

Based on CR’s evaluation thus far, the Alfa Romeo Tonale hasn’t felt as if it’s up to the Italian brand’s standards, whether compared with the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV, or even Alfa Romeos of yore. It doesn’t ride well, isn’t particularly sporty, and has a variety of frustrating controls.

Based on the same platform as the Jeep Compass and new Dodge Hornet, the Tonale is offered only as an all-wheel-drive, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and comes in three trims: Sprint ($42,995), Ti ($44,995), and Veloce ($47,495).
